瓦旦：好，爸爸。要怎麼做呢？
爸爸：我們要先找到適合的樹木，然後敲打樹幹，讓菌種著根。
瓦旦：明白了。這樣香菇就能順利生長了嗎？
爸爸：沒錯，這是我們祖先傳下來的智慧。

Yana: hata hmkangi hnuk pgzi hru tcingaw ta mistmaq balung ru musa tmangu kiya la.
Watan: baqun mu la maha hani lga musa mblaq hmbkuw tqinuw la.
Yaba: uway! Gani halay son maha kinbaqan na kinbkisan.

導讀
繪本的時間放在爸爸(泰雅名字: 瓦旦．猶甘)的時光裡，透過當時那個小男孩的眼光裡述說故事。
環山部落在海拔為1800公尺，四季分明，春天開始滋生綠葉，夏日枝葉開花結果，秋天豐收水果，冬日將準備好的苧麻整好織線，織成保暖衣物，族人們會在夏天狩獵的肉類、魚等醃製做日常配菜，農作物則在高山的片岩地質種植小米、馬鈴薯等。
